One Teen's Story... of Rehabilitation and Community Re-entry...

Sarah was an honor student in her junior year of high school with enough credits to graduate early. She was very active in extra-curricular school activities. Then, every parent's worst nightmare occurred. Sarah had a car accident and was rushed to the nearest trauma center where she was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury. Once she was stabilized, she transferred to Weisman Children's Rehabilitation Hospital. Upon arrival, Sarah was in a coma. She had a tracheostomy to help her breathe and a gastrostomy tube to provide nutrition. Sarah was unaware of her surroundings and required total assistance for seemingly simple tasks such as bathing and dressing. Standing and walking were not even options.

The staff at Weisman used a systematic approach to help Sarah to regain the necessary skills for community re-entry. For 12 weeks, Sarah received daily one-on-one physical, speech, occupational, and recreational therapy and progressed from our inpatient to our day hospital program. The team coordinated their efforts with Sarah's school and selected care providers in her home community to ensure that her discharge was both safe and successful.

As a final step in her rehabilitation process, Sarah was transitioned into our outpatient program, where she continued to be evaluated regularly by our pediatric physiatrist while received her physical, occupational, and speech therapy services. Steadily, Sarah reclaimed her active life. Today she is graduating from high school and will attend Monmouth College in the fall. She holds a part-time job and is looking forward to summer at the beach with her friends.

New Medical Day Care Facility

The new facility is located in Pennsauken, NJ at The Point on Route 38. This facility is the new home to our Medical Day Care Center and a second location for our Outpatient Services. The Medical Day Care Center allows children from birth to age six with special medical needs to thrive in an environment with skilled nursing support and care that no ordinary day care can provide. Our free transportation services will still be available at the new location. Our Outpatient Services include one-on-one Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech/Dysphagia Therapy with our specially trained pediatric staff. These outpatient therapies will be available at both the Marlton and Pennsauken locations. Rehab in your own backyard!
