At Weisman Children’s the safety of our patients, families, and staff are always our top priority. That is why at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, we quickly pivoted to creating a telehealth program for our outpatient services.

When we returned to providing pandemic safe in-person sessions in June 2020, telehealth remained a pivotal part of our outpatient services and one that we continue to offer to our families today.

Telehealth is a great way to receive therapy services in the comfort of your own home. Although it is different from traditional in-person visits, our telehealth services can be just as effective in reaching your therapy goals, which has been the case for many of the children we have helped over this past year. At Weisman Children’s, we are committed to unlocking the potential of your child, no matter the situation.

We understand that telehealth is still a relatively new concept and something that we continue to improve each day. To help share what we have learned, we created this useful guide for you to answer potential questions or concerns about our telehealth services.


Weisman Children’s Telehealth Services Helpful Information

  • Telehealth is the use of technology and telecommunications to deliver and manage health care. At Weisman Children’s, our goal is to use videoconferencing in order to deliver therapy services to you in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Prior to your first appointment, every family will have an initial call with one of our therapists, to answer any questions and help us ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable telehealth experience.
  • During your telehealth sessions, our therapists will coach you on how you can address your child’s therapy goals throughout the rest of the week in your home environment.
  • Weisman Children’s telehealth program offers physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy to children 0 to 21 years of age.
  • Children learn best through play and having fun. Telehealth can be just as fun as an in-person session and most patients look forward to it! Our therapists come up with creative games, activities and competitions to keep your child motivated. Even better, your child can bring their favorites toys to therapy!
  • Studies have shown that telehealth is just as effective as in-person therapies, with the additional benefit of not having to leave your house. Our telehealth sessions are live one-on-one sessions. They are an interactive experience personalized to your needs.

Yes! Some parents even prefer telehealth because there child is learning in his or her natural environment. We have found that telehealth can improve parent involvement and carry-over, which improves outcomes.

School therapy and outpatient therapy typically have different goals. School-based therapy is generally focused on improving a child’s ability to access their education in their school or learning environment. Outpatient therapy is focused on helping your child participate in age appropriate activities in your home and community. Goals and treatments aim to assist a child to develop the health, mobility, and self-care skills necessary for success. Although both therapists may be treating the same child, there is likely a difference in strategies and activities.
Telehealth sessions are an interactive experience. There are various ways to keep your child or toddler’s attention during a session, which could include providing motivational activities, a visual schedule, or having your child in a room with minimal background noise and away from a window. Your therapist will collaborate with you to provide the appropriate cues (visual, verbal, or physical) in order for your child to have a successful telehealth session.
Yes! Infants benefit from hands-on handling from their loved ones. They are dependent on caregivers to take care of them and set them up for success. Our therapy team will work with you to ensure your infant has all the tools to be successful with telehealth.
Yes! If your child is under 18 years of age, they will need a guardian present in order to start the session. Your child may also benefit from your involvement and it may help them focus more on task.
Although we will be providing services through the telehealth model, our therapists and parents work together as a team to help your child accomplish their goals. Your therapist will demonstrate and walk you through handling techniques, giving feedback and reinforcement to ensure that you are achieving the correct movements.
Oral feeding can be targeted by telehealth by providing you education regarding optimal positioning, appropriate utensils, and placement of food within your child’s mouth. We can also target sensory-motor feeding by guiding you and your child through a process of food exploration from smell, touch, and all the way to taste. Therapists can also provide tips to improve chewing and swallowing skills.
The general requirements in order to participate in telehealth are a stable and reliable internet connection and a smart device with a video camera, such as a smartphone, laptop, Chromebook, tablet, or desktop computer with a webcam. Generally, Zoom recommends internet speeds of at least 1.5 mbps.
We are currently using Zoom for telehealth appointments. It is free and readily available on Windows, MacOS, Chrome, Android, and iOS for you to use. You do not need create an account in order to attend the meetings.
Yes! Zoom utilizes secure encryption and advanced security features including unique access codes and passwords for all videoconferencing rooms. Therapists control the waiting room to ensure proper entry. Sessions are not recorded.
This will depend on your insurance, please contact our Business Office to find out what your insurance covers.
If you believe that you never received an initial email, please contact your site scheduler by calling your local therapy site. The Zoom appointment information will remain the same throughout the month, so please keep track of emails sent to you by our scheduler.
If your therapist believes that telehealth is not appropriate for your child, your therapist will initiate plans to transition your child to in-person visits. Unfortunately, this may mean being put on our waitlist temporarily.
