Frequently Asked Questions
What programs are offered are Weisman Children's?
The goal of rehabilitation is to maximize function and ability and, at the same time, educate and train the patient and family so the transition back into the community and home are as smooth as possible. At Weisman, our inpatient, day hospital and outpatient programs are designed to meet the rehabilitative goals of patients from infancy through age 20 based on their unique needs.
What does a typical day at Weisman look like?
The inpatient program is very intensive and requires a lot of structure. Generally, nursing care is provided before the therapy day begins. Depending on age and diagnosis, therapy is scheduled between the hours of 8am and 4pm. Patients who meet the criteria for acute/comprehensive rehabilitation will receive no less than 3 hours of therapy. Periods of rest and "down time" are incorporated, as needed.
The day hospital program offers the same intensity of services as the inpatient program. The difference is that patients are well enough (not requiring 24 hour medical/nursing/respiratory supervision) to live at home. Patients is this program can transition from an inpatient program, be referred by another hospital and or community physician. Meeting admission criteria and obtaining insurance approval are required for this program as well.
The outpatient program offers services in the area of physical, occupational, speech (communication), and dysphagia (feeding/eating/swallowing) therapies. Physician referral and insurance approval are also required.
Who will be involved in the care of my child?
Our interdisciplinary team has many members that includes: pediatric physiatry (a doctor who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation); physical, occupational, speech (communication), dysphagia (feeding/eating/swallowing) therapies; child life/recreation therapy; rehabilitation nurses and respiratory therapists; social work, case management, and nutrition services. Psychology, infection control and medical sub specialties as in pulmonologist are available to co-manage the care of our patients.
Can parents/family members participate?
Yes. Parents are a part of our team. We value your input and want you to be involved as much as possible. Educating the family as early as possible in the rehab process is important so you can understand everything having to do with the care of your child. Weisman provides knowledge and expertise in pediatric rehabilitation, but nothing can replace the love of family.
What are visiting hours at Weisman?
Parents have 24 hour access; all others must be healthy and may visit with the permission of the patient/parents between the hours of 8am and 8pm.
Can parents stay overnight?
Yes, one parent is permitted to stay overnight.
Does Weisman have private or semi-private rooms?
There are both types of rooms at Weisman.
Is parking available at Weisman?
Yes, parking is available and there is no fee. There is also public transportation pick up/drop off in the parking lot as well.
What is the time frame for being hospitalized in the inpatient program?
Every patient is unique, so the length of stay will vary. Some admissions are very short (days/weeks) and because of the nature of the diagnosis, other admissions may last more than a month or two. We will give you an estimate once the evaluations are completed after admission.
